Q. Who can your blood donation help?

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center must collect more than 1,000 donations a day to help meet patients' needs in our region. Blood donations can help a variety of individuals: trauma victims, surgery patients, premature babies, cancer patients and many more. In less than one hour you could help save three lives!

Q: How safe is the process?

The process of donating blood is the safest it has ever been. All of the equipment is new and sterile and disposed of immediately after each donation.

Q. What are some of the benefits of donating blood?

Every donor has the ability to help save three lives with their one donation. Additionally, donors receive an added health benefit through a “wellness check,” which includes a check of their blood pressure, temperature and iron levels, as well as a cholesterol check after the donation.

Q. What should I eat before donating?

Donors should eat foods rich in iron such as red meats, leafy vegetables, breads and fruit to minimize theirs chances of deferral.

Q: What are the basic requirements to donate blood?

You have to be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Individuals who are 16 years old, weigh at least 122 pounds, are in good health and have their parent's consent also may donate.
