"My daughter was undergoing scoliosis surgery, and they needed four people in my family to donate one pint of blood. My daughter needed four pints of blood during surgery. Those four pints my family donated helped my daughter, so I want to help other children/people in time of need. I have been donating ever since."

"My initial donation was during the spring Shell downtown blood drive, and was an effort to participate in a company-sponsored event. Subsequent to that when I went in to make my second donation, staff inquired if I had the time to make a platelet donation. Because of my blood type, they remarked that it would really be helpful if I could. The experience was good, and it was my day off so I had plenty of time.
"Since then, it has become somewhat a mission of mine to continue to donate platelets on a regular basis. I am a rather new resident of Houston and making these donations has helped me feel that I am more of a part of this community. I have donated often enough now that several staff members call me by my first name when I arrive, and that adds to my comfort level of being accepted in the community."
