A Gathering of Heroes

Nearly 1,000 heroes who were responsible for countless lives saved came together on Sunday, April 2, 2006, for a celebration of their commitment. “A Gathering of Heroes” is Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center’s event to recognize and thank all those gold-level donors who Commit for Life and give blood at least once a quarter.

Held at Minute Maid Park just one day before the Houston Astros’ opening day, “A Gathering of Heroes” treated gold-level donors to food, fun and a presentation that highlighted the importance of ongoing donations. Jim O’Neill, who is the Commit for Life voice behind The Blood Center’s television spots, served as emcee for the day.

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center’s new president and CEO, Brian Gannon, took advantage of the opportunity to introduce himself to the crowd and personally thanked donors for their life-saving contributions. A family that has benefited from donors’ gifts first hand also shared their story, as Mike and Julie Romano explained how their son, Johnny, has received blood since being diagnosed with leukemia last year at age 7.

The event also honored donors who have given 10 gallons or more. A special 10-gallon donor reception area welcomed new 10-gallon donors, who received commemorative pins, and higher-achieving donors. All those who had donated 10-gallons or more by the end of 2005 received a certificate recognizing their outstanding gifts.

Thanks to all those who made “A Gathering of Heroes” a success, and to all those Commit for Life donors whose continued commitment helps save thousands of lives every day.
