The blood drive program that Memorial Hermann Healthcare System has hosted for many years has been a great success, but this year’s June drive was an impressive exception. The Memorial Hermann drive, which occurred June 26 through 29 at various Memorial Hermann campuses, far exceeded their life-saving target of 968 donations by bringing in 1,177 donations and helping save more than 3,531 lives. This success came with the support of executives and managers within the organization, which provided staff with the encouragement and approval to do an incredible service – to save lives.
The success of this drive also could not have come at a more perfect time. Blood usage is up almost 15 percent – approximately 20,000 units – in 2006. That is the highest level of usage in The Blood Center’s history. So it is blood drives like this organization’s that will help keep the supply strong, now and in the future. Memorial Hermann's commitment to become a Commit for Life partner and host a drive once every quarter in 2007 also will help continue to keep the supply strong.
"Memorial Hermann employees have a history of unwavering support for the wellbeing of our community by taking the time to donate blood," says Dan Wolterman, president and CEO of Memorial Hermann Healthcare System. Wolterman showed his support of this life-saving effort by encouraging all employees to Commit for Life.
The dedicated employees of Memorial Hermann Healthcare System truly set the bar with everything they do, and their blood drive program is no exception. Memorial Hermann provides a wonderful model and success story that can be passed on to other organizations. Through the combination of executive and management support, using the great tools The Blood Center provides, and by spreading the word on the importance of donations, they demonstrate how any blood drive program can be a tremendous success.
