High school blood drives set the pace for future Commit for Life donors

Using the tools and knowledge gained through Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center’s Power of Life program, Bellaire High School has made a commitment to saving lives, with outstanding results.

In 2006 alone, school blood drives brought in enough donations to help save as many as 1,323 lives. The students are continuing their life-saving efforts into 2007 by hosting an additional drive this spring.

The leadership of their blood drive chairperson, Beryl Bolton, a teacher a Bellaire, has helped school blood drives become notable events. Her commitment to the program has spanned over 10 years and is still going strong, as she has established a successful routine for planning blood drives and passes the knowledge on to her students.

One of the keys to her success is the good relationship she has maintained with school administrators. She has helped them understand the importance of the blood drive program, and they, in turn, have given their support to the program. Ms. Bolton is even able to arrange for a substitute teacher to cover her classes on the days of their blood drives, as she works on the front line with her PALS students to ensure a great event.

She also encourages other faculty members to become involved with the blood drive program and help save lives along with their students. The Bellaire community has been supportive of the high school’s blood drives, and Ms. Bolton often facilitates food donations so the students can stay healthy and hydrated for their donations.

Keeping the students educated about saving lives is important at Bellaire High School, and PALS students represent the school each year at The Blood Center’s Real World educational workshop. Through The Power of Life and their chairperson’s guidance, these students realize they are saving lives – and are primed to be the Commit for Life donors of the future.
