The Blood Center awards The Power of Life scholarships
Congratulations to the four The Power of Life scholarship winners! Each high school student was awarded a scholarship in the amount of $2,000 during The Blood Center’s “A Gathering of Heroes” event on Sunday, March 4.
In addition to good food and great conversations, a highlight of the day was the presentation of scholarships to Zoe Cadore, Christopher Carnicle, Stephanie Kauffman and Vickie Liang.
Scholarships were awarded based on essays submitted by the students suggesting ways to encourage a greater commitment to saving lives among their peers. One by one, each student came up to accept a scholarship certificate from Brian Gannon, The Blood Center’s president and CEO. Their beaming faces reflected the pride and delight of their family members and friends seated in the audience.
Zoe Cadore, a Bay City High School student, was accompanied by her mother, Judith; her grandmother, Hercelia Martin; her aunt, Gail; and two younger brothers, Jared and Joel. In the fall, Zoe plans to participate in theater and dance while she majors in law at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia.
Christopher Carnicle was accompanied by his parents, John and Alma; his grandmother, Gloria Castaneda; and younger brother, Joey. Chris is the defensive cornerback on the Cypress Falls High School football team. At this time, Chris is considering attending Ohio State University or the University of Texas in Austin. He would like to pursue a career in engineering.
Stephanie Kauffman is a student at Oak Ridge High School. This fall,
Stephanie will attend the University of Evansville in Indiana where
she will study physical therapy.
Stephanie’s younger sister, Beth, and her parents, Eric and
Julie, watched ardently as Stephanie received her scholarship.
Vickie Liang of Westside High School was accompanied by a good friend. Vickie would like to attend Brown University and enter the program in liberal medicine. She would like to have a career in medical research, specifically in pathology or oncology.
The Power of Life scholarships are provided by the Education and Research Committee of the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center Board of Trustees. This committee is charged with promoting continuing education in the communities served by The Blood Center.
The Blood Center congratulates these exemplary students on all their achievements and appreciates their inspirational words about the importance of saving lives.
