Spotlight on Success

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is deeply grateful to CenterPoint Energy for their long-standing support of The Power of Life high school program. CenterPoint has provided financial support to help create and sustain one of our most successful blood donor recruitment programs. From the program's beginning in the 2003 - 2004 school year, CenterPoint Energy has generously provided the funds for marketing and promotional materials for The Power of Life. Now in its third year, the program is going strong and recognized as one of the most successful high school blood donor recruitment programs in the country.
The Power of Life continues to have significant and positive impact
on our community’s blood supply. High school blood donors
are the largest demographic of The Blood Center’s volunteer
blood donors, comprising 14 percent of the total.
Specific achievements in the 2005 - 2006 academic year
included:
161 high schools held blood drives, a 4 percent increase in the
number of high schools holding blood drives over 2004-2005;
High school blood drives collected a total of 27,985 units, a 7
percent increase;
Blood collected from high school drives accounted for 20 percent
of the all blood collected from mobiles drives - the third-largest mobile
donor group.
The Power of Life, a Commit for Life program, is a comprehensive educational and blood donor recruitment program, targeted at high school students ages 17 and 18 in a 24-county area in the East Texas and Texas Gulf Coast regions. The program provides guidelines and timetables for planning, promoting and implementing blood drives in a high school setting, along with resources needed to ensure their success, including printed material, a special Web site portal and the services of a team of Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center staff.
The program was developed with input from high school blood drive chairpersons and administrators, and the educational and promotional materials were designed and written to resonate with the youthful target audience. Our community education coordinator and account representatives work closely with the high school teachers and administrators to provide students with valuable and meaningful benefits from the program, such as community service credits and curriculum materials. In addition to providing a solid volunteer donor base now, The Power of Life educates youth about the need and importance of blood donations, and provides a positive experience from which to build a lifelong commitment as a blood donor.
As a supporter of The Power of Life, CenterPoint Energy’s sponsorship allowed us to produce the following material:
- The Power of Life chairperson workbook;
- Appointment cards and hall passes that allow a student to “skip” class to help save lives;
- The Power of Life banners placed in the high school during the recruitment period and blood drives;
- The Power of Life marketing and training materials.
- CenterPoint Energy, which provides about 4,000 donations through dozens of blood drives annually, continues to "power up" saving lives.
- They are helping to permanently increase the blood supply in our community by providing donations today and donors for tomorrow.
