CFL Volunteer Opportunities

Speakers Bureau
            Speakers support community outreach by speaking to groups and raising awareness about the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center and Commit for Life.  A speaker's responsibility is to share your personal story about the importance of giving blood and the Commit for Life program.  Engagements vary in length and attendance, depending on the request.  Speakers must be friendly, outgoing, and persuasive, have excellent public speaking skills and be comfortable presenting to groups of diverse size and make up.  Additional training is provided through our speaker's workshop.  Details >>

Thank You Crew
            The purpose of the Thank You Crew is to provide WOW customer service and consistently deliver our service promise.  Members also monitor the scheduling and flow of donors along with donor safety in the canteen while supporting the collections staff and sponsor group at drives.  Member's responsibility includes: following the GET SET service standard, maintaining the donor schedule, answering basic questions, observing donors in the canteen area for reactions following the donation process while serving refreshments, sharing the Commit for Life program, actively recruiting donors and setting up promotional tables or distributing promotional items if applicable.  Those interested must have a desire to help others, excellent communication skills, be dependable, friendly, attentive, enjoy people and have mobility to serve refreshments.  Transportation is not provided and there is a minimum 2-hour commitment per drive.

Community Advocates
            Advocate members represent their community in a partnership to increase donor participation, donation frequency and awareness at Neighborhood Donor Centers.  Advocate members are responsible for attending monthly meetings.  They network through their work place, schools, places of worship and organizations to spread the word and identify opportunities to educate and inform about Commit for Life.  Advocates also host and support community blood drives.  Individuals interested should be willing to work with a team while being community and goal oriented.  A minimum commitment of one year is required.  Advocate members must be at least 16 and provide their own transportation. Chairperson
            A chairperson volunteers by motivating, organizing and implementing an individual blood drive program in their community, school, business or place of worship.  They are responsible for working with their area consultant to identify, execute and evaluate components of successful blood drives.  A chairperson is also responsible for actively recruiting donors on site.  This volunteer is a community-minded team leader who is organized, enthusiastic, able to delegate and goal oriented.  Learn more about our Group Program for a chairperson.

Office Support
            The purpose of this volunteer is to assist with work in various departments at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center's Headquarters and at Neighborhood Donor Centers.  They are responsible for performing a variety of tasks that can include filing, mail-outs, follow-up phone calls, data entry, helping to prepare for special events, photocopying materials and answering phones. These individuals are detail oriented and willing to work as part of a team.  Transportation is not provided.

Bone Marrow Volunteers

            The purpose of the Bone Marrow volunteers is to educate and inform the members of the community, especially the minority community, about the functions and the needs of the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). During Bone Marrow drives volunteers will be responsible for educating volunteer donors on NMDP guidelines for joining the registry, reviewing Consent Form for accuracy and for labeling donor consents and buccal swabs. All volunteers are provided with training and orientation before participating.  Transportation is not provided. Volunteers must be 12 years old or older to participate. Volunteers 12-14 years old must be accompanied by a trained parent or guardian to participate. 18 years and younger requires parental consent.

Sickle Cell Awareness Volunteer
 Individuals who have a knowledge of sickle cell disease and the importance of matched blood donations to sickle cell patients are needed to help educate the community on this specialized need.
